Through his lens and different photographic techniques, Francesco Arese Visconti has investigated in the last decade important migratory processes in Italy and Switzerland. His projects are a clear continuity of more than a century of visual practices related to humanity. When looking at his work, the concept of “social documentary photography” comes into mind, a concept whose roots go back to the 19th century.

Arese Visconti is bringing a fresh look on economic migration and the urban-geographical spread of 21st century migrants. If not as clearly an open activist as Jacob Riis (1849-1914) in the sense of promoting social reforms, Arese Visconti nonetheless perpetuates Riis’ heritage by investigating one facet of Italian reality. Both also use the camera as a mirror through which to explore society.

An experienced freelance photographer, Arese Visconti has worked for a number of museums and public institutions. He is the Head of Media Communications and Photography Program Coordinator at Webster University Geneva. His work focuses on the migration processes in Switzerland and in Italy. In 2012, he published the book New World – Stories of African Immigration and Integration in Switzerland, and in 2015, he completed two projects on the Italian-Chinese community in Prato, Italy: Hidden Identity – The Italian-Chinese community in Prato and We, Prato. Arese Visconti is also member of the Union Suisse des Photographes Professionnels (USPP).
